DHR Health is a Level 1 Trauma Center in the Rio Grande Valley. Trauma care is focused on handling the most serious conditions such as car-crash injuries, gunshot wounds, traumatic brain injuries, stab wounds, and serious falls. Our Trauma Center provides 24/7 coverage by trauma surgeons and specialty physicians and offers the most advanced technology.

Trauma
Resuscitation Unit

DHR Health’s goal is to provide the Rio Grande Valley with the highest possible level of trauma care. In order to do this, on June 11 2021, DHR Health opened the Trauma Resuscitation Unit. This new unit is designated to take care of trauma patients and includes; 3 resuscitation bays, 6 treatments beds, a hemobank (contains whole blood, PRBCs, and FFPs), level 1 rapid infuser, REBOA catheters, thoracotomy trays, a GlideScope™, pediatric and adult crash carts, difficult airway carts, and other trauma-specific equipment.

DHR Health opened its doors in 1997 as an ambulatory surgical center. Today, it is a modern, 530-bed acute-care facility that provides a full range of medical services, with over 60 specialties and subspecialties. Our vision from the start has been to provide state-of-the-art care of the highest quality for patients at all stages of life and their families. DHR is one of the largest physician-owned facilities in the Unites States and offers some of the most comprehensive trauma and medical care on the U.S. southern border.

Trauma Surgery

Trauma surgery is the surgical treatment of severe, life-threatening injuries. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, at DHR Health, there is always a trauma surgeon available to meet the needs of our community. With our life-saving expertise and state-of-the-art technology, our goal is to ensure the best possible outcome for patients.

Trauma Surgical ICU

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at DHR Health is a specialized intensive care unit where the hospital's most critically ill patients recover from traumatic injuries and surgeries. The SICU is staffed by specially trained trauma physicians and nurses who care for patients 24 hours a day.

Trauma Follow-up Care

Trauma Clinic allows patients who have received care at DHR Health for traumatic injuries or other general surgical cases to receive follow-up care with the same team. This allows the trauma team to closely monitor, and if needed, intervene throughout the healing process of our trauma patients.

Anesthesia

At DHR Health, our Anesthesiology Department is ready to take care of any trauma patient. An attending anesthesiologist is available 24 hours a day for emergency airway management in the ICUs, for conscious sedation procedures, and for comprehensive perioperative care in the TRU, OR, and PACU. Along with the other members of the OR team, our anesthesiologists are ready to receive trauma patients within 15 minutes of our most severe trauma activation. Trauma patients benefit from access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, which allows for the highest quality of care.

Cardiac Surgery

As the premier cardiology program in the Rio Grande Valley, the DHR Health Heart Institute provides a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures for the treatment of cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. We combine the latest technology with patient-focused care to create the best healing environment.

ENT (Ears, Nose, and Throat Surgeon)

The DHR Health Ear, Nose and Throat Institute provides specialized treatment of sinus, ear, nose, and throat disorders. Combining expertise and compassionate care with DHR Health’s advanced medical resources, we deliver accurate diagnostic services and effective treatments for patients of all ages.

Hand Surgery

DHR Health Hand and Wrist Institute offers specialized treatment for ailments involving the hand, wrist, fingers, forearm, and elbow. Our team of experts is passionate about assisting adult and pediatric patients in regaining their full quality of life. With a board-certified hand surgery physician on staff, DHR Health Hand and Wrist Institute is well equipped to provide the quality care you deserve. Our patients have all of our resources supporting them, including access to DHR Health Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute Hand Therapy Center for continued hand and wrist care.

IR (Interventional Radiology)

Interventional radiology uses imaging as a guide for minimally invasive surgical procedures that diagnose and treat diseases. A wide range of interventional radiology procedures share the common goal of minimizing risk to the patient. Types of imaging include fluoroscopy, MRI, CT, and ultrasound.

Intensive Care Physicians

Our team of intensive care physicians at DHR Health are highly trained and ready to take care of the most ill patients. Their collaboration with the Trauma Team allows patients with complex issues and comorbidities to receive the most comprehensive care.

Neurosurgery

Traumatic brain injuries occur across all ages but at higher rates in the youngest and oldest individuals. It is common for patients to experience changes in their cognitive functioning and mood following a traumatic brain injury. Neuropsychological testing is beneficial in identifying strengths and weakness after a head injury. They are often used as part of the patient’s rehabilitation treatment program. In addition, follow-up testing is helpful to monitor progress in the patient’s cognitive functioning over time.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Our maternal fetal medicine specialists provide coverage for in-hospital OB/Gyn patients at our DHR Health Women’s Hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Rest assured that you will have the support of your physician when most needed.

Ophthalmology

The DHR Health Eye Institute is your trusted partner for restoring, enhancing, and protecting your eye health. We are experts in ophthalmic surgery and provide a wide range of treatments for vision correction, cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, and other eye disorders. We understand how unique your eyes are; we take a personalized approach to patient care, which ensures excellent health outcomes and improved quality of life.

Orthopedic Surgery

At DHR Health Orthopedic Trauma Institute, we treat a wide range of high-impact injuries. Auto accidents, falls and sports-related injures usually occur with high impact, which can fracture, displace, and shatter bones. Any injuries sustained during a high-impact activity should promptly be evaluated by an orthopedic team.

OMF (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

At DHR Health, the OMF team is available 24/7 and specializes in evaluating and managing acute injuries to the mouth and face.

Thoracic Surgery

Vascular Surgery

We specialize in general and peripheral vascular surgery using the most advanced technological treatment methods possible, including minimally invasive procedures, when appropriate. We provide evaluation and treatment of conditions such as lower extremity arterial disorders, aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and varicose veins.
